Local food fans, there’s no need to mourn the passing of the harvest season.Get your palates ready for some of the same strawberries, squash, and other fare you bought at farmers markets during the warmer months. This year, a dozen or so growers in Buncombe and surrounding counties contracted with nonprofit Blue Ridge Food Ventures to fresh-freeze their mostly organic foods, which will be offered on a share basis all winter. When you buy a $120 share in the venture, called Winter Sun Farms, you can pick up six to eight pounds of fruits and vegetables at an Asheville locale each month from December to March. There’ll even be purées for soups and dips. “You can open a bag, add three other ingredients, and have a meal in 20 minutes,” says Chris Reedy of BRFV. Think Community Supported Agriculture on ice.
