Literacy Council of Buncombe Co.
This Asheville-based organization seeks tutors for adult and child reading instruction, as well as English as a second language. Volunteer opportunities require a 15-hour minimum training session and at least a one-year commitment. The council kicks off fall with its Authors for Literacy Dinner and Silent Auction on September 5 in Asheville. The fund-raiser features a keynote presentation by author James Patterson. Blue Ridge Literacy Council
Located in Hendersonville, the Blue Ridge Literacy Council offers opportunities for adult learners—students who are 18 or older. The program is noted for its one-on-one attention, careful matching of students and tutors, and free service. Currently, the council’s 120 volunteers instruct more than 200 students per year. After a 10-hour training, volunteers spend about three hours per week tutoring. For more: (828) 696-3811; www.litcouncil.org

Burke County Literacy Council
Located in Morganton, this council offers several services that depend on volunteers, from one-on-one literacy instruction of children and adults to English as a second language to a special program to help new immigrants qualify for citizenship. At present, 45 tutors are assisting 139 students, and there’s always room for more help from those who want to share crucial, life-changing skills. For more: (828) 437-7477; www.burkeliteracy.org
