Independent Bean - Hendersonville

Henderson County’s first large-batch coffee roaster opened its brick-and-mortar location in June with a “farm to mug” philosophy. Enjoy espresso drinks and pour overs made with beans including a Rwandan peaberry and an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, plus loose-leaf teas and baked goods. 346 7th Ave. E.; (828) 674-7494; www.independentroasters.com

Anchor Bar + Kitchen - Asheville

The owners of Barley’s Taproom and Salvage Station opened a new sports bar in West Asheville’s former Buffalo Nickel in August. The menu features pizzas and slices with creative twists like coconut curry sauce and locally raised beefalo, plus nachos, wings, and burgers. 747 Haywood Rd.; (828) 412-5956; www.theanchorbarandkitchen.com

Southside Soul Mobile Cuisine - Asheville

Green Opportunity’s new food truck dishes up healthier versions of soul food favorites, like greens stewed with smoked turkey, using produce sourced from local community gardens. Executive Chef Gene Ettison says GO’s goal is to “educate students on working in a mobile kitchen from concept to implementation.” Find the food truck on Fridays at Habitat Tavern and Commons and at A-B Tech on Tuesdays.
