Doc Brown’s BBQ - Candler
Grandma would feel right at home at this new barbecue joint and reincarnation of David “Doc” Brown’s food truck. Inspired by beer culture, Brown dreamed up the idea of coleslaw flights—choose four of the many slaw options, including vinegar, jicama, and Lexington style. Pork is cooked in a wood-pellet smoker and served alongside local beer. Wooden booths keep it casual at this family spot, which opened in December. 1320 Smoky Park Hwy.; (828) 633-6901; www.docbrownbbq.com

Cafe Rule & Wine Bar - Hickory
An antique motorcycle greets visitors to this southern-inspired café and wine bar. A small plate of flash-fried broccoli with vegan aioli tops the menu, which also includes shrimp and grits and fried okra. The heated garden patio seats 100 guests, and a private chef’s table lets diners see the action up close. 242 11th Ave. NE; (828) 324-2005; www.caferule.com

Mad Co Brewing - Marshall
Sit back and watch the game with local brews and bratwurst at Madison County’s first and only brewery. The rustic 3,000-square-foot building includes a spacious deck overlooking Blannahassett Island. Guest brews are on tap for the first few months of operation; the brewery’s own beers will be ready by the planned grand opening in March. 45 N. Main St.; (828) 649-8600; www.madisoncountybrewing.com
