Ervin told CIA Director Richard Helms in 1969 that the agency “now enjoys as totalitarian powers as can be tolerated in a free society.”
While generally known for his senatorial congeniality, Ervin could also prove a fiery inquisitor during hearings he chaired.
Ervin’s career in Washington was bookended by his battles with two notorious politicians, Senator Joe McCarthy and President Richard Nixon.
