BLACK BALSAM KNOB - Pisgah National Forest
At first, Black Balsam might not seem like the best spot for hammocking since it’s known for its wide-open grassland view. But along the 1.5 mile out-and-back hike to the Knob is a hub of trees that can support portable hammocks. The wooded area is serene in the summer, especially since the wildflowers bloom there this time of year. Just past milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, take FS 816 to the end of the road to find the Black Balsam parking lot and trailhead. fs.usda.gov

WATERROCK KNOB - Scott Creek
This hammocking destination is one of the best places to watch the sunset because of its panoramic views. Sitting at nearly 6,000 feet high, the Blue Ridge Parkway’s highest elevation visitor center is located here, and it overlooks the many of our region’s mountain ranges including the Great Balsams, Great Smokies, Cowees, Nantahalas, Blue Ridge Mountains. At night, its open views make it a fantastic spot for stargazing, and there are picnic tables to enjoy as well. If you are feeling daring, try taking the short-but-strenuous hike to the top of the mountain. nps.gov

LAKE JULIAN PARK - Arden
Lake Julian is close to Asheville and has many modern amenities yet still feels like an escape from city life. The park has hammock pods—stands that allow groups to hang together—in the wooded areas overlooking the water. Visitors can also take a boat out on the water, play some disc golf or volleyball, and grill out. Forgot your hammock? Borrow one from the Ranger station. 37 Lake Julian Rd.; buncombecounty.org
