Roly Poly - On Precious Earth, 17" x 11" x 11", stoneware By Lynne Hobaica and Rickie Barnett

A complex and unique piece, this stoneware art was made by Twoheaded Diver ceramic sculpture creatives Lynne Hobaica and Rickie Barnett. On exhibit through November 2 at Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, On Precious Earth projects a whimsical, fanciful aesthetic that’s simultaneously surreal and thought-provoking. According to Barnett, both he and Hobaica come from religious backgrounds, “and our love of narrative and fantastical storytelling stems from that. We pull inspiration from our own stories as well as folklore, religious text, old oral traditions and the histories of our families and our friends.” The two have exhibited their work independently and collaboratively in galleries across the United States, with Hobaica also showing in Linz, Austria. Barnett notes “Through our work we feel that we gain a better understanding of ourselves . . . how to keep living and loving in a world that has so much pain and darkness in it. We are often dealing with life’s heavier elements under the moniker of play.” See more of their work at twoheadeddiver.com
