Artful Excellence: Asheville Art Museum receives national accreditation
Share this

The Asheville Art Museum has been granted accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, a national organization that creates standards of excellence for museums, and offers programs of evaluation that elevate their quality. According to the Alliance, founded in 1906 and comprised of over 35,000 museums, accreditation is earned after both self-evaluation and peer review, and can take over a year to complete. “Accredited museums are a community of institutions that have chosen to hold themselves publicly accountable to excellence,” explains Laura L. Lott, AAM president and chief executive officer of the Alliance.

The Asheville Art Museum first earned AAM accreditation in 1984, and it has continually held that title since then. Museums are awarded this title based on their performance, and how well they achieve their missions and goals; Asheville Art Museum’s mission is, “to engage, enlighten, and inspire individuals and enrich community through dynamic experiences in American art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.”
