Preserving Pisgah: Buncombe County is moving forward with its inaugural state park
Pisgah View State Park, Buncombe County’s first and North Carolina’s 40th such greenspace, is progressing steadily toward its 2025 opening, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.
In December, the state acquired 230 acres of land that, for centuries, was held by the Cogburn family, bringing the total acreage gleaned to roughly 1,300, with about 200 more to go according to the park’s planners. Originally, fundraising was predicted to take roughly five years, however, in November, an increase in budget from the state government sped up the timeline. The $2.28 million purchase brings total expenditures to more than $15 million for the park, which boasts waterfalls, springs, wildlife, and invaluable ecological benefits. Though the park is currently closed, officials are working on a master plan that will include public meetings and seek residential input.
