Not for the faint of heart, the Black Mountain Marathon sees runners start in the race’s namesake town before winding their way through the trails to the 6,600 foot summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in Eastern America. Festival organizers stress that participants should not underestimate the dangers of the event, but see it as a great way for experienced marathoners and weekend warriors to test themselves against the elements in this grueling winter run. Proceeds benefit the Black Mountain Fire & Rescue Team, the Swannanoa Valley Museum, and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. » Downtown Black Mountain; Saturday, 7 a.m.; Registration: $125-$135; (828) 713-8171; www.blackmountainmarathon.com
