David Ellsworth has been a leading force in studio woodturning for over 45 years, recognized for his thin-walled, hollow, wood-turned vessels, spheres, and now sculptural wooden forms. He’s a founding member of the American Association of Woodturners, is a Fellow and former Trustee of the American Craft Council, has received notable honors, including the Smithsonian Institution’s 2021 Visionary Award, and has pieces in the permanent collections of 44 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has taught across the country and runs his own woodturning school out of his Weaverville studio. A divergence from the lathe and the elegant vessels for which he’s widely recognized, the Emergence series is an exploration of scale, gesture, and movement. And while they may be reminiscent of a bony tail or horns, the inspiration, he says, is modeled after collapsible drinking cups.
