Tea Bowls, sgraffito porcelain, 4" tall by Becky Lloyd, Clyde

With a background in archaeology and a love for ancient civilizations and designs, Becky Lloyd crafts functional black and white mugs, pots, plates, and vessels that reflect the timeless nature of pottery. Lloyd employs the centuries-old technique called sgraffito, the process of cutting through layers of clay to create intricate designs. Each piece is hand-thrown with English porcelain and coated with black terra sigillata slip, which produces a striking contrast when the design is carved. Pottery has always been a personal endeavor for Lloyd, but since she lost her husband, cocreator, and “partner in clay,” Steve, three years ago, her work has taken on new meaning. “Steve will always be in every piece I make,” she says. Find Lloyd’s work at Southern Highland Craft galleries, Ariel Gallery in Asheville, and online at www.lloydpottery.com.
