If you like to take the scenic route, Barber’s Orchard Fruit Stand in Waynesville is easily accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway. But once you’ve been, the journey may very well be eclipsed by the destination.

Operated for 18 years by Jane and Benny Arrington, the store crawls with life. Folks jockey for space alongside drunken yellow jackets to choose from 15 varieties of apples and myriad related products—preserves, cider, turnovers, and the much-lauded apple cake.

Reviewers from Southern Living and National Geographic have gotten juiced up about Barber’s tasties, and mountain native Kim Arkansas confirms the hype.
“It’s just not fall without a trip to Barber’s Orchard,” says Arkansas. “I definitely go for the turnovers, and I always get two, one to eat right away and one for later. Sometimes you have to stand in line for them, and you get to meet people from all over the country waiting to taste a little bit of WNC heaven.”
