Treat?, acrylic, 24" x 24"
Nicknamed “the dog lady,” painter Angela Alexander specializes in pet portraits and often focuses on canines. Her chihuahua, Sadie, provided the initial inspiration for her whimsical, bright caricatures of beloved four-legged friends. “When Sadie passed away, the process of painting kind of changed,” she says. Her acrylic portraits still capture the unique personality of each of her subjects through bold colors, but she now focuses on a more muted style with broader strokes. Alexander chooses to give back to her local furry community with her series Forget Me Not. These paintings shine a spotlight on dogs that have been at Asheville’s Brother Wolf Animal Shelter for longer periods of time, and 30 percent of her proceeds benefit that rescue. Alexander’s workspace is at NorthLight Studios in Asheville’s River Arts District, and her paintings can be found around town at Woolworth Walk and pet-friendly Aloft hotel. www.angelaalexanderart.com
