Wisteria, oil on panel, 8” x 8” - Andrew Mastriani, Asheville

A multifaceted artist who works proficiently in both charcoal and oil mediums, Andrew Mastriani‘s primary objective in creating is to both convey and invite emotion. Now living and working in Asheville’s environs, he previously lived in Charleston, SC, where he owned a decorative painting company for 15 years.

“I wanted to escape the heat of the typical Southern US, and desired Asheville for its distinct beauty and people. Here I found a thriving artist community and tourism industry that support each other,” Mastriani explains.

His creations are either large black and white charcoal drawings, or colorful oil paintings.“My art works are based on themes of surreal skyscapes, clouds, and storms. I draw inspiration from the sky, but view my physical paintings in relation to color theory and surface. Many of these concepts are similar to mid-century abstract expressionists.”

Mastriani was among thousands in WNC whose lives were altered because of Hurricane Helene. “I lost about 25 percent of my art work, all of my furniture, and the studio I called home for the past six years,” he says. Since that catastrophe, he has been “very lucky to find a wonderful new space in Pink Dog Creative.” andrewmastriani.com
