A groundbreaking local nonprofit, Green Built Alliance (formerly the WNC Green Building Council), launched in 1991 to promote home energy efficiency in Buncombe and surrounding counties. Turning the corner on two decades, GBA can point to demonstrable results in making the mountain area greener—and home energy budgets leaner. Learn more about the organization’s programs at greenbuilt.org.

• 1.3 million is the collective savings on energy bills resulting from GBA’s work.

• 500 low-income homes in Buncombe have received efficiency upgrades through GBA’s Energy Savers Network.

• 2,500 homes have been certified to green standards by GBA.

• 2042 Propelled by GBA and other local groups, this is the year by which Asheville and Buncombe County have committed to completing a transition to 100% renewable energy.

DIY tip: Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, which use 75% less energy and can last up to 25 times longer.
