Erin Taylor and Matthew McConomy met at the popular Charlotte music venue, Petra’s, when Matt, a bassist, was playing a show with his band. To celebrate their fourth anniversary, the couple traveled to Asheville to visit the Asheville Art Museum. Matt surprised Erin by popping the question in the museum’s rooftop sculpture garden.
The pair knew they wanted to celebrate their love among the reds and oranges of Western North Carolina’s peak fall season, and were drawn to Homewood because of the beauty of the architecture and the warmth of the venue space. As Matt and Erin both work in the arts field, they’re surrounded by talented creatives, who all pitched in to assist on their special day. Close friends banded together to perform music and DJ for the wedding, do hair for the bride and groom, and even make the couple’s rings.
To honor Matt’s late mother, Erin carried the handkerchief she used at her wedding, a seat with her photo was placed in the front row, “Close to You”, a favorite song of hers by The Carpenters, played during the ring blessing ceremony, and Matt enjoyed the mother-son dance with his aunt to Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, another favorite of Sharon’s.
Putting a fun twist on an unfortunate cancellation, Matt’s grandparents sent cardboard photo cutouts of themselves (in their wedding attire) to be a fun part of the big day. The life-size cutouts were used during the couple’s portraits and placed by the bar during the reception so that guests could take selfies with them.
