Avery County’s origins date back to the 1700s when European colonizers first overtook the land that was originally home to the Cherokee Nation. Named after Waightstill Avery, a prominent lawyer and politician, the area was also home to a number of familiar surnames such as Banner, Braswell, and Greene. Alongside craft vendors, fresh food, and live music, both the local Historical Society and the Genealogical Society will be sharing information about the region’s heritage and lineage. » Newland Town Square, 301 Cranberry St.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; free; (828) 733-7111; www.averycountymuseum.org
