YMCA of Western North Carolina

With six facilities in Buncombe, Henderson and McDowell counties, 23 child care locations, and over 200 programs, this nonprofit offers volunteer opportunities including greeting members at the service desk and tutoring youth at after-school programs, or you can stay active by coaching youth sports or teaching swim lessons. HEALTHY HAYWOOD 

Based in Clyde, this community health organization is governed by a steering committee and relies heavily on volunteers, aka coalition members. Beyond assisting at a fitness challenge or 5K run, volunteers are invited to attend monthly meetings, where they have the opportunity to help prioritize community health concerns and plan and execute solutions. Involvement might include addressing issues of substance abuse, chronic disease, nutrition, physical activity, or other concerns effecting residents of Haywood County. COMMUNITY CARE CLINIC

This Boone clinic provide care for families in the High Country that lack health insurance. With a predominately volunteer staff, it seeks help from people with and without medical backgrounds. Opportunities include scheduling patient appointments, data entry, and clerical work. Physicians, health educators, nurse practitioners, and others from the health industry are asked to devote a few hours a week or month, for at least three months.
