Fete Set: USO Belles at the Hayes Center
The Liberty Belles on Broadway tour made a stop at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock for two performances the weekend on August 27-28. The first show was a sold out gala, while the second was open to the general public and added due to demand.
The USO Liberty Bells perform at military homecoming and deployment ceremonies, VA hospital tours and shows in honor of fallen heroes. The quartet of singers at the Hayes Center sang Broadway and Big Band songs, as well as contemporary tunes by the Black Eyed Peas. There were also many patriotic standards, such as "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "God Bless America." The back house was active, even standing and dancing for many numbers including a spirited version of "My Boyfriend's Back."
A pre-performance reception was held at Chetola Resort in which top donors got to mingle one-on-one with the singers. Several veterans from Watauga County were also honored at a post-show cast party, in which the performers sang some tunes acapella.
The special performance will help sustain the Hayes Center until its grand reopening in the summer of 2011.
